5th Annual IIG Awards

banner 5th annual

IIG members and guests alike had a fantastic time at this year’s awards party on Friday, September 30th. There were appearances by Stevie Ray Fromstein, Ron Lynch, Emery Emery, musical group LA3Way (led by Karen Hart, the hard-rocking wife of IIG member Brian Hart) … not to mention a tiny UFO which may have tried to abduct Jim Underdown.

Special Award

Dr. Dean Edell was given an award for his years of radio and television series promoting good medicine. Comedian Stevie Ray Fromstein presented the award, and Dr. Edell accepted via video.

Mainstream Entertainment

Posthumous awards are no fun, but nonetheless, we gave an Iggie to the then-cancelled “Bad Universe” … Phil Plait’s wildly entertaining astronomy series on the Discovery Channel. Producers Scott Pearlman & Melanie English accepted the award from Fromstein. Phil Plait sent a video acceptance.

Truly Terrible Television

Making the transition from recipient to presenter, comic actor Ron Lynch presented a TTTV “award” to episodes of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” featuring Dr. Oz. These episodes featured some of the worst medical advice in broadcast history. Accepting the award was “Oprah” and “Dr. Oz” producer Kevin Borenstein … who bore an uncanny resemblance to Actor and “Ardent Atheist” host Emery Emery. “Bornstein” started a gracious acceptance speech that turned into screaming tirade, he tore up the award, and marched offstage.

Houdini Hall of Honor

There were two inductees into the HHH this year, with Jim Underdown and actor Curtis Haymore presenting the honor. First, sci-fi author and science educator, the late Isaac Asimov was added to the perpetual plaque.

Then, uber-investigator Ray Hyman was inducted into the Hall of Honor. Hyman appeared via video to accept the award, but he actually spent most of speech praising Asimov.

The party didn’t end there, though. Magician Dan Bowen and mentalist/IIG Member Mark Edward performed in the Steve Allen Theater until midnight. Another fun evening for skeptics.
